leftcoast's Diaryland Diary

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are the hero of our own story.

I started a book this summer that I've been writing quotes that I think hold some value to me. Maybe they will be a value to some other people one day too!

"The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. The brick walls are there to stop the people who don't want it badly enough." - Randy Pausch

"When you see yourself doing something badly and nobody's bothering to tell you, that's a bad place to be. You may not want to hear it, but your critics are often the ones telling you they still love and care about you, and want to make you better." - Randy Pausch

"I am a part of all that I have met"

"Effective leadership is more often a matter of participation then direction"

"The lashes of the tongue are far more severe than any whip"

"What does not destroy me makes me stronger" - Friedrich Nietzsche

"The only way any of us can improve is if we develop a real ability to assess ourselves. If we can't accurately do that, how can we tell if we're getting better or worse." - Randy Pausch

"I know you're smart. But everyone here is smart. Smart isn't enough. The kind of people I want on a research team are those who will help everyone else feel happy to be here." - Randy Pausch

"Luck is indeed where preparation meets opportunity."

"If you wait long enough, people will surprise and impress you - when you're frustrated with people, when they've made you angry, it just may be because you haven't given them enough time."

"Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted"

"Experience is often the most valuable thing you have to offer."

"You are only as good as your word"

"The ability to form friendships, to make people believe in you and trust you, is one of the few absolutely fundamental qualities of success."

"The true result of the endeavor, whether on a mountain or in any other context, maybe found rather in it's everlasting effects than in the few moments during which a summit is trampled by mountain boots. The real measure is the success or failure of the climber to triumph, not over a lifeless mountain, but over herself. The true value of the enterprise lies in the example to others of human motive and human conduct" - Sir John Hunt

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands during challenge and controversy." - Martin Luther King

"Do not try to satisfy your vanity by teaching a great many things. Awaken people's curiosity. It is enough to open minds, do not overload them. Put there just a spark. If there is some flammable stuff it will catch fire." - Anatole France

"Strong people make as many and as ghastly mistakes as weak people. The difference is that strong people admit them, laugh at them, learn from them. That is how they became strong." - Richard Needham

"There is a difference between loneliness and being alone; there is a choice of mind in being alone; but loneliness comes up through the heart into the heart" - William Kauliner

"There are beginnings and there are endings. What meaning and effect your experience here will have on your life only you will ultimately know. The responsibility as always, is yours to make of it what you will." - John Hurst

"I've learned you can tell alot about someone by the way they handle these three things: A rainy day, Lost luggage and tangled christmas lights" - Maya Angellou

"Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anybody else expects of you. Never excuse yourself. Never pity yourself. Be a hard task maker to yourself and be lenient on everybody else." - Henry Ward Beecher

"It's this simple: If I never trying anything, I never learn anything. If I never risk anything, I never go anywhere. If I go ahead and do it, that affects how much I continue wanting to do it. When I hold myself back, I trade appearances for the opportunity to find out what I am really like." - Hugh Prather

"Too much caution is bad for you. By avoiding things you fear, you may let yourself in for unhappy consequences. It usually is wiser to stand up to a scary seeming experience and walk right into it, risking the bruises and hard knocks. You are likely to find it is not as tough as you had though. Or you may find it plenty tough, but also discover you have what it takes to handle it." - Norman Vincent Deale

"Twenty years from now you will become more disappointed by things you didn't do than by the things you did do." - Mark Twain

"Be yourself. Everyone else is taken."
